New Town Eagles got off to a disastrous start to their Southern Championship match against Glenorchy Knights on Friday night when they fell behind to an own-goal in less than a minute.

Before 5 minutes were up, Knights led 2-0 as Jade Clay bent a free-kick from wide on the left past keeper David Kruijver.

Ethan Engels netted the third in the 20th minute and the game was as good as over.

Eagles had a great chance to pull a goal back when a misplaced Clay pass back to his keeper was intercepted by Jamie Vernon, but the Eagles striker sent his shot wide with the goalmouth beckoning.

Callum Brown showed an amazing turn of speed down the left wing in the 23rd minute to beat several opponents and score Knights’ fourth.

Ethan Engels added his second and the Knights’ fifth in the 37th minute after the ball had crossed the line before being scooped out by Kruijver before Mathew Nowicki, looking suspiciously off-side, hit a sixth for the Knights 3 minutes before the interval.

Harrison and Leszczynski

Eagles’ central defender Andrew Telega went close with a header from a corner, the ball just clearing Dmitri Nester’s crossbar.

Ethan Engels completed his hat-trick 3 minutes after the resumption to take the score to 7-0 for the home side.

Nowicki got his second in the 52nd minute when he hammered home Hugh Foley’s cross from the right, while Ethan Engels completed the Knights’ tally with his fourth for the night.

The speedy and skilful Samuel Leszczynski netted a consolation goal for Eagles, but it was a mere token effort from a side that was well beaten on the evening.
