The visiting Calder United from Victoria easily brushed aside Taroona to win their first game of a three-match tour 5-0 at KGV Park.

Calder led 4-0 at the break and added another goal in the second half, just when Taroona started to get their act together, but it was much too late for the home side to recover.

Kasha Meyer put Calder ahead in the 13th minute, while goals from Raquel Delares, Emma Robers and Catherine Zimmerman put the game out of reach of Taroona by the interval.

Taroona fought back in the second half and restricted the visitors to just one goal, scored by Zimmerman.

Taroona played former American professional Melinda Minstrell in defence after she came out of retirement. Minstrell is probably the only female to have played in a top-flight senior men’s competition in Tasmania, although Sarah Fitzgerald may have played for Nelson Eastern Suburbs men in the second-tier competition.

Horgan applies pressure

Taroona coach, Ben Horgan, said:

“They’re another level from us, but it was really valuable.

I’m pretty pleased with what we did in a lot of respects. We learned heaps from it and we’ve got the video there and we’ll go and have a look and I think the players will learn more from that one game than they will in half the season.

“Yes, a really good experience. Obviously, we’ve got to deal with set-pieces better because that made life very difficult for us. They were creating plenty of problems for us anyway.

“I’m pretty pleased with the way we stuck at how we’re trying to play. It’ll be a good learning experience for us.”

Calder United coach, Mark Torcaso, said:

“It was very good. We’ve come out here a couple of times in the last few years and it’s been fantastic to be able to come here again. Obviously, we thank Tassie and the Tassie crew for hosting us. It’s exactly what we want, a nice hit-out before our season starts.

“It was hard. It was hard for the first 15 or 20 minutes. I know some of the girls who were out there because they’ve spent some time in Victoria. It’s good for what we want it for. It’s very important.

“We’ve got a squad of 20. We brought some of our under-19s over and they’ll be part of the senior squad during the season, so we want to give them a few minutes tomorrow as well.”
