University were held to their second draw of the Southern Premier League season on Saturday, but they retain a 12-point lead over second-placed Clarence United and third-ranked Taroona.

The Students and reigning champions Beachside drew 2-2 at Sandown park, while Clarence United and Taroona played out a 1-1 draw at Wentworth Park.

The Beachside and University game was goalless in the opening half despite the Students having 10 shots on goal. Only two were on target, and that told a story. John Buga had those two shots from close-range, one of which was brilliantly saved by Beachside’s keeper.

A mis-pass by University in the 73rd minute gave possession to Beachside, whom scored with a shot into the top corner of the net.

In the 77th minute, University keeper Aiden Jackson dropped a cross at the feet of a Beachside player, who netted easily to give the home side a 2-0 lead.

With 10 minutes remaining, University were awarded a penalty, but Luke Huigsloot had his spot-kick saved. The referee ordered the penalty retaken, but the Beachside keeper again produced a save.

Huigsloot then moved into the attack and scored twice in the closing 7 minutes to salvage a point for the visitors.

Clarence United dominated the opening half against Taroona but had just one goal to show for it because of the heroics of Taroona keeper Rob Hortle.

He was finally beaten midway through the opening half by Paul Bremner, whose powerful shot went in off the underside of the bar.

Taroona brought on David Abbott, who had just returned to Australia after going to the World Cup in Brazil, for the second half and he livened up their attack.

Full-back Jackson Marsh hit the equaliser in the 64th minute after Clarence failed to clear a corner.

Clarence went within a whisker of winning the game in the final seconds when substitute Declan Brown’s shot hit the left-hand post.

In the remaining match of the round, Nelson Eastern Suburbs overcame New Town Eagles 3-1 with goals by Fleming, Hillhouse and Wallace.
