Launceston City, the bottom side in the Victory League, scored an important win on Saturday, beating sixth-ranked Kingborough Lions United 2-1 away at Lightwood Park.

After a goalless opening half, City struck twice in the second period before conceding near the end and having to endure a nail-biting finish before collecting the three points.

Beachside, the reigning Southern Premier League champions, host current leaders University at Sandown Park at 2.30pm today in what should be a close game despite the huge gap between the sides on the standings.

University lead with 40 points, whereas Beachside are fourth and a massive 14 points adrift.

Sunday will be the time of reckoning in the Victory League for leaders South Hobart and second-placed Tilford Zebras when the sides meet at South Hobart Oval at 2pm.

Zebras desperately need to win this one to move to within 3 points of the reigning champions.

Some comments recently have referred to Ivan Zilic, a brilliant winger with Hobart Olympic in 1999. They have compared him to current Olympia Warriors star Eduardo Cabello.

Here is my match report of the 1999 Grand Final between Hobart Olympic and Glenorchy Knights, in which Zilic starred, just for old time’s sake.
