The Southern Tasmanian under-14 boys’ team beat New Town Eagles 5-3 in a practice match at Clare Street today.

“The result wasn’t important to us,” said the State under-14s’ coach, Tommy Fotak.

“We set out with two goals for this match.

“We achieved the first and just got a pass mark on the second, so that will be our training focus next week.

“For their first game together, I thought the boys played really well.

“They tried to play the ball out from the back at every opportunity.

“Defensively, we need to become more cohesive and we need to ensure that the distance between the lines isn’t too great.  We were a bit stretched at times.

“At half-time, we spoke about the risk of square passes.  We hit eight or so in the second half, all of which were intercepted, so there’s something to be learned there.

“I was pleased with what I saw and that’s our baseline now.

“Everything we do from here has to be an improvement on that.”

Damian Rose hit a hat-trick for the State under-14s, while Jaryn Prendergast netted once.  The remaining goal was an own-goal.
